About the learner's licence test
How many questions are in the learner's licence test?
64 questions in three sections: 28 on the rules of the road, 28 on road signs and 8 on the controls of your vehicle.
Hessequa Municipality in the Western Cape says its computer test gives you 64 questions picked by the system, with 60 minutes to answer them.

What is the pass mark for the learner's licence test?
You pass each section on its own mark: at least 22 out of 28 for the rules of the road, 23 out of 28 for road signs and 6 out of 8 for vehicle controls.
A high score in one section cannot make up for a low score in another, so you need all three.

What must I bring when I apply for a learner's licence?
You apply in person at a driving licence testing centre. The Regulations ask for your identification, two identical recent photos of your head and shoulders (40 mm by 30 mm), and the fee your province sets. If you are 65 or older, you also need a medical certificate.
The examiner also checks that your eyesight meets the standard in the Regulations. Ask your testing centre what else it needs before you go.

How long is a learner's licence valid?
24 months from the day you pass the test. Regulation 101(1) first set 18 months, and Government Notice 134 of 17 February 2010 extended it to 24 months.
If it runs out before you pass your driving test, you need a new learner's licence.
